The club was established in the Summer of 1959 by a few enthusiasts.and quickly became a recognised force in the game. The site for the club was revealed as the current site at Selshion Moss on the Moy Road
The club first tasted success in 1964 when a talented group of young hurlers captured the Armagh Minor Title. Back-to-back Senior County Championship wins in 1966 and 1967 were also achieved. The Club was folded during the late 80's and early 90's as the player base dyed out.
The revival occured in the middle of the 90's with the introduction of an underage set-up, promptly followed by the return of a senior team. Success came quickly as the skill of a young Portadown side prevealed in many competitions. Portadown were also making their name heard within the county set-up at Senior and U-21 with Ryan Sands and Kevin Quinn flying the flag for St. Malachys. As the county make progress in the right direction they are bringing more and more St Malachys players into the fold with Micheal McGuigan and Ciaran Mulholland representing Armagh at U-21 and Senior Level.
